Guilt, Shame, Dishonour: The role of emotions in the communication of Islamist social media actors

Islamist online actors try to convince followers of their world view in a variety of ways. Online posts often refer to socio-political developments, which are intended to gain additional persuasive power by linking them to recurring narratives. However, it is not only the factual content level that plays a role in communicative persuasion attempts, but also the emotional level.

This is the aspect which this publication seeks to address. Drawing on examples of online posts, its aim is to illustrate how the communication of Islamist online actors employs negative emotions or emotional appeals, focusing on the emotions of fear, guilt and shame, and the associated concept of dishonour.
